• Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says RB DeMarco Murray's power separates him

    26 Jan 2012 | 2:22 pm
Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray missed the final three games of the season with a fractured ankle while Felix Jones finished up in his place. But if owner Jerry Jones' words mean anything, Murray will have his starting spot back as soon as he recovers. "He's just harder to bring down than Felix," Jones said of Murray. "Felix has the quickness, the vision and can get outside. But Murray did bring that dimension of power, and there's probably not five pounds worth of difference between the two. But he finishes. He's just so powerful into the finish. And there's no question that he…

Welcome to Conference Championship Week, my friends. I've been extremely busy over the past several days doing number crunching for my 5th annual rankings analysis. Every September I join forces with the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) and put out a call to fantasy football experts inviting them to submit their preseason positional rankings. I then compare the experts' rankings to the actual fantasy rankings at the end of the season and determine which expert was the most accurate. The results of the contest will be posted here with all sorts of detail on the top sites at each…

Earlier this week I flew to New York City for a meeting at work - I still work for a museum library up there even though I'm now living in Knoxville. It was surprisingly awesome to be back and I was a bit taken aback by how much I missed the city. But it also left me with zero spare time for blogging - and you all know how eager I was to write and celebrate the Broncos' victory last week. I won't blab on and on about it, don't worry, but I was truly impressed with the caliber of play from several guys and am excited to see what they pull together this weekend. I've got a handful of divisional…

My husband is out of town for an economics conference in Chicago this weekend and just realized that he'll be flying home during the end of the games on Sunday. Sad for him. I'm planning on putting my son to bed for the night by 4:30 on Sunday so that I don't miss a second of what I assume will be a brilliant Broncos victory. Kidding, kidding, my son wouldn't go for that...and perhaps a Broncos victory isn't in the cards. But we shall see! A Bronco fan can hope, can't she?! I want to turn my league into a keeper league and not sure how to go about it. its a 10 team league. We start QB, 2RB, 2WR, TE, K, DEF. no ppr or negative pts for int's. a full roster is 26 players and must keep a minimum of 20 and must maintain at least 20 throughtout the season. i guess my questions are in a keeper league how do you decide on how many players should you get to keep after the season? Whats the standard number for most leagues? Just looking for help and suggestions on how to start a keeper league. Thanks

  • Thoughts on Brad Childress as OC?

    27 Jan 2012 | 12:46 pm
What are some thoughts on Brad Childress as an offensive coordinator? The Browns are believed to be interested in Brad Childress for their offensive coordinator position. As an AdP owner I have had issues with Chilly in the past as he would feed Adrian Peterson the ball between the twenties but then he seemed to yank him near the goal line. If Chilly had success with that plan I didn't seem to notice so that always irked me. It seemed to me that his offenses never did anything of note so I was always puzzled why he seemed to be a leading candidate for OC and HC positions. I don't have…

  • Fantasy Football 2012: Ray Rice or Darren Sproles in PPR League?

    25 Jan 2012 | 11:51 pm
Just because the fantasy football season is over doesn't mean you can't start getting ready for the next one.  Ray Rice and Darren Sproles each had phenomenal seasons and were big reasons why the Ravens and Saints each made the playoffs.  The same could be said for fantasy owners.  Rice and Sproles are even more valuable in leagues with a point-per-reception (PPR) scoring format.  The task at hand is deciding which one should be selected before the other in PPR drafts.  The Case for Ray RiceOne might infer that a guy who gains over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and…

The 2011 Fantasy Football season was a year of record breaking statistics at the quarterback position. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about verterans like Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, or those up and coming like Matthew Stafford, Tim Tebow, or Cam Newton. There were also disappointments like Peyton Manning, who was eventually placed in IR due to a neck injury. So, let’s review the top ten quarterbacks from this year. These rankings might vary depending on how your fantasy league scoring system was established. These rankings are based on NFL.com‘s fantasy leagues.

I know his BABIP was really high last year but he also had a pretty impressive ISO. Losing the 3b eligibility hurts but if he can build on last year it wont matter where he is in your lineup. The 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR Sprint Cup car was unveiled as part of the Charlotte Motor Speedway Media Tour yesterday. Featuring a completely redesigned sleek new silhouette and fresh face, the 2013 Fusion Sprint Cup car was designed to be the face of a new era of stock car racing. Personally, we think it needs more stickers on it.  "We wanted Fusion to be the car that helped return ‘stock car’ to NASCAR.” stated Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing.  “I think fans, when they see the car, are just going to smile and cheer. It is going to reengage them with the sport and make…

First off, don't ask how we stumbled across this. OK, we'll tell you. While scrolling through a list of new ebooks coming out this month, an image popped up and we thought, "Cool, Jon Gruden has a new book out." Wrong. It was a chick book. Which immediately left us wondering, "Why is Jon Gruden on the cover of a vampire romance novel?"  Seriously, who else would have those horrible wispy bangs? AFC Image by Getty Images via @daylife Baltimore Ravens (+7.5) vs. New England Patriots – While everyone is firmly on the Pats bandwagon after last Saturday’s 45-10 romp, people are forgetting one thing: New England did not beat a team with a winning record the entire season, last Saturday included. So while this is at home and the TE duo is hotter than ever, it’s certainly not a foregone conclusion that the Patriots will win. In fact, we think if Baltimore plays its game they’ll be the team that advances from the AFC. When the Ravens have the ball, look for them to…

AFC Image by Getty Images via @daylife Houston Texans (+7.5) vs. Baltimore Ravens – This is a rematch from earlier in the year when the Ravens handled the Texans 29-14. And while that could happen again, we don’t think it will.  There have been far too many times where OC Cam Cameron abandons Ray Rice and the running game and that’s not going to cut it this week. When the Texans have the ball, look for them to continue to run first and pass second. The Ravens are pretty solid vs. the run but RB Arian Foster will be a factor this time around. While QB Matt Schaub is absent,…

NFC San Francisco 49ers (+3.5) vs. New Orleans Saints – The Saints are getting all of the love in the media as the team to beat and have been made a 3.5 favorite in San Francisco. Before everyone begins booking hotel rooms in Indianapolis, they may want to step back and analyze the facts a bit more closely. New Orleans is 0-4 in road playoff games and their offensive production dropped dramatically when on the road AND on grass in 2011. They even lost at Tampa Bay. When the Saints have the ball, look for them to attack with the pass to set up the run. If there’s one area to attack…

NFC Image by Getty Images via @daylife New York Giants (-3vs. Atlanta Falcons – This game is about as even as they come. And the 3 point betting line suggests that the odds makers think just that. The edge however lies with the home team as Atlanta, who plays in a dome, must play outdoors in what figures to be a chillier Sunday afternoon. The Giants are also getting healthy and hot at the right time. Their D Line is almost back to full strength and they’ve been getting after opposing QBs. So, look for the Falcons to try and run the ball with RB Turner to set up the passing game,…

AFC Image by Getty Images via @daylife Houston Texans (-3) vs. Cincinnati Bengals – Although the Texans have played their worst ball of the season lately, they’re catching a Bengals team that failed to beat one playoff team the entire season. They also showed distinct holes against the run in their finale as Ray Rice torched them for two long TDs. Against Arian Foster and Ben Tate, that’s a weakness that’s sure to be exploited. This should be a competitive game throughout, but look for Houston to win a lower scoring game by 7 on the back of a strong defensive effort…

It looks like we get to see the Giants and Patriots in yet another super bowl game. The 2012 fantasy football season is finally winding down to a close with the super bowl and pro bowl being the last two games of the fantasy season. Those of you in the fantasy football playoff challenge games are reaping good benefits if you chose any Patriots or Giants players. Sunday against the 49ers, Eli Manning completed 32 passes on 58 attempts for 316 yards, 2 touchdowns and no picks. Joe Flacco tried his hardest and led the day with Eli Manning, throwing for 306/2/1. Drew Brees was next in line for top quarterback performers. He threw for 462 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Eli Manning was also solid once again putting up his stat line of 330/3/1 in a win against the heavy favorites, Green Bay Packers. Arian Foster was the lone 100-yard rusher in week 19. He ran for 131 yards and 1 touchdown on 27 carries, but it was not enough to beat the Baltimore Ravens. On the receiving end of things, there were…

Well, we didn't see this one coming.Prince Fielder, the top free agent left on the market, inked a nine-year, $214 million deal with the Tigers on Tuesday. That works out to $23.78 million per year, in case you were wondering what his W2 is going to look like.Fielder, who will turn 28 in May, is one of the premier sluggers in the majors and still in his prime. Since his rookie season in 2006, he ranks third in HRs (228), trailing only Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols. His 646 RBIs are good for sixth, and his 569 runs check in at 15th. Even his .282 career average is respectable. Basically, if…

Including the record $51,703,411 posting fee they paid last month just to secure exclusive negotiating rights with Darvish, the Rangers will have paid the right-hander more than $111 million by deal's end, or almost $19 million per year. The New York Yankees ranked 11th in team ERA (3.73) in 2011, and a patchwork rotation didn't hold up in the postseason. In a long-awaited response, the Yankees solidified their rotation. New York sent top prospect Jesus Montero to Seattle for front-line starter Michael Pineda. The Yankees also signed veteran pitcher Hiroki Kuroda.Pineda and Kuroda will without a doubt get a "Yankee bump" in value on draft day. Owners drafted A.J. • Madson reclaims value with Reds

    11 Jan 2012 | 8:17 am
The Cincinnati Reds have a new closer, at least for the start of 2012.Free-agent reliever Ryan Madson signed a one-year deal with the Reds on Tuesday, meaning he'll have a chance to close again in the short term. This is a thrifty move for the Reds. Cincinnati now seemingly will cut ties with Francisco Cordero, who blew 14 saves with a 3.16 ERA the past two seasons. Madson, meanwhile, is cashing in on a career year with 32-of-34 saves and a 2.37 ERA. That included 62 Ks in 60.2 innings. He served as the perfect waiver-wire wonder for owners who drafted Brad Lidge. The one drawback is Madson is…

What will the Seahawks do with Marshawn Lynch??? It sounds very likely that Free Agent RBs Ray Rice and Matt Forte are going to be Franchise Tagged. Rumors also suggest that Raiders free-agent RB Michael Bush might also get the Franchise Tag. This would leave The Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch the best Free Agent RB that hasn't been Franchised Tagged yet. It would be nice to see Lynch stay on with the Seahawks as he has been running well nn that system and the O line improved to the point of being one of the teams strong points.

Ray Rice @ Patriots - Playing against one of the better defenses in football Ray Rice failed to put up start worthy numbers in his first playoff game of the year. Heading to New England, Rice will play against the team he had his best playoff performance against a few years ago when he broke off an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game. The Ravens have come close to finding the Super Bowl in recent years, and this could be Ray Lewis’s last legit chance to finally get back to the big game. Hakeem Nicks @ 49ers - In case you fell into the trap that the media seemed to set about Victor Cruz being the only big-play threat in New York, true No.1 Hakeem Nicks has stepped up and put together back to back monster games in the playoffs. This week should be a greater challenge for Nicks as the 49ers tend to do a better job wrapping up (with an exception to the Jimmy Graham touchdown in the fourth quarter last week) pass catchers in the open field, as the Falcons and Packers have struggled in that regard all year. More than a possession receiver, Nicks is one of the top five receivers in…

As a 49er fan, it refreshing to see what can happen for a team and a quarterback when quality coaches come on board and actually put their players in situations to win. For all the hell Smith’s taken over the years from Bay Area fans, he’s earned his respect, and it’s time to throw out the idea that opposing teams can put the game on Smith’s shoulders,…

Rob Gronkowski vs. Ravens - The Broncos must have ticked Rob Gronkowski off after their regular-season meeting when they held him in check for only four receptions for 53 yards, as they forced Tom Brady to throw the football to fellow tight end Aaron Hernandez. Well, in the rematch Gronkowski went off for arguably his best game as a pro with ten receptions for 145 yards and three touchdowns. I’m not sure what to knock Gronkowski for in any part of his game, as he came into the league with a previous back injury problems, but those issues, haven’t been a problem with New England.

What a wild week of games in the NFC, and while many figured we would be talking about the Saints and Packers playing this Sunday, instead we have a very interesting game between the 49ers and Giants. Both teams are red hot, and both teams won last week with opportunistic defenses that creating turnovers throughout the game. All that said, it’s going to be a hard challenge going forward for any team defense to give you big production. While the 49ers and Giants will have their turnovers, you might be better off rolling the dice with the Patriots defense, if you’re willing to play…

As I’ve mentioned previously regarding the 2012 class, it’s a relatively deep group at the running back position and extremely talented at the very top of the first round (in fantasy drafts).  The receivers beyond Blackmon are talented in their own right but there exists a high degree of variability in 2012 with regard to predicting which of the…

Regardless of how you project Luck’s prospects at the next level, you have to admit (at least I hope you do) that it’s easy to get behind a college player that just seems to get “it”.  Luck bypassed bigger money in 2010 by opting to stay in school, work on his game and finish what he started in 2009.  The Fiesta Bowl didn’t end as he had hoped, losing to the Oklahoma State in a high scoring affair and losing the…

If you follow Liriano, you should be prepared to lose your mind. It wasn't long ago when groups of people flocked to the performances of Francisco. In 2006 Francisco Liriano was an artist; his arm a brush, the strike zone his canvas. Liriano was so spectacular a grass roots counterculture developed in the land of 10,000 lakes. Whether it was the drugs or not, we had forgotten about the best pitcher in baseball (Santana). Later the world would forget about Johan, but it wasn't because of the shadow cast from Liriano's immensity, as the Cisco Kid would be taken…

  • Tiers, Not Fears: Catchers

Things are looking up for Carlos SantanaPhoto Credit:SD Dirk"After laughter, comes tiers"- Wu Tang Clan, "Tierz" Even Shaolin's Finest understood the power of tiers. So it's only right that we kick off the Sons of Roto 2012 Fantasy Baseball Draft Kit with a run down of the top 45 catchers in fantasy baseball, tier-by-tier.Why 45? It's a nod to the Wu Tang Clan's "Enter the 36 Chambers." Confused? You should be. Only real hip-hop fans like myself know that there were nine extra chambers that couldn't be mentioned on the album because they were so deadly.More after the jump:

  • For Those About to Draft, We Salute Yu

    24 Jan 2012 | 8:05 pm
This guy is filthy, but he's no Dice man. It's feel a little strange to salute a man of half-Iran, half-Japanese descent. Aside from the momentary feeling of tribalism and the nuisance of not being about to draft John Rocker, all systems are go for the latest import from the Far East. The scouts love him, the numbers are superb, but the masses are still baffled by Dice K's gyro-ball. One man's ignorance is a million dollar man's profit. Let's do the impossible; let's project the unknown. Today's forecast: sunny with a chance of 185 Ks.

  • Conference Championship Rankings

    18 Jan 2012 | 8:16 pm
We are getting down to the wire in this second to last round of the 2011-2012 NFL Season. Unexpectedly, we lost some major powerhouses last week with the Packers and Saints both falling out of the running. We are left with the final four with the 49ers and Giants in the NFC and the Ravens and Patriots in the AFC. For those of you playing postseason games, we've ranked the remaining contenders for you. Good luck!QuarterbacksThere really wasn't a lot of thought required in this one. Tom Brady is the last remaining QB from the Elite class. The Ravens may have ranked 2nd against the pass on the…
  • Divisional Round Rankings

    11 Jan 2012 | 2:18 pm
We're one week closer to the Super Bowl and we've lost four more teams worth of players. Fantasy studs like Calvin Johnson, Matthew Stafford, and Roddy White are all gone. Not to worry as the two top seeds from each conference get injected into the mix. That's four more rosters full of talent. We break them down for you with our rankings for the Divisional Round.QuarterbacksRodgers claims the top spot over Brees for a few reasons. The Giants may have just shut down Matt Ryan with ease, but on the season they ranked 24th worst against the pass, averaging over 265 yards per game and nearly 2…

The regular fantasy season may be over, but playoff challenges of all kinds are just beginning. The Fantasy Football Freaks have compiled their rankings for the first round. Find out who they think are the strongest players at each position and good luck in all of your postseason contests. QuarterbacksBoth Brees and Stafford finished the season on fire and we could be in for an epic shootout in the Superdome. Obviously, these guys get top billing this week. Close behind is Eli Manning, who finished 6th amongst QBs in total points, and Matt Ryan who gets to face Eli's defense. They have been…
  • Week 17: Gems for the Last Weekend

    31 Dec 2011 | 11:02 am
This is the last weekend for fantasy football and time to ask yourself whom you should start if you made it to your money rounds. Week 17 is a crazy week to have a championship weekend, but it seems as most players will be playing, the question is, how long? Here are some players you can start this weekend and see solid results from.Matt Flynn is probably going to start and play the whole game. The Packers have the number 1 seed all wrapped up and don’t need to play Aaron Rodgers. Insert Flynn who will have all the wide receivers at his disposal. Look for a big game out of Flynn and ride…

  • Championship Round – RB Rankings

Ray Rice @ Patriots - Playing against one of the better defenses in football Ray Rice failed to put up start worthy numbers in his first playoff game of the year. Heading to New England, Rice will play against the team he had his best playoff performance against a few years ago when he broke off an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game. The Ravens have come close to finding the Super Bowl in recent years, and this could be Ray Lewis’s last legit chance to finally get back to the big game. While the Ravens performance was a little disappointing against Houston, it should be…

Alex Smith vs. Giants - If you happened to have Alex Smith in your lineup last week, you were pleasantly surprised to see him not only throw for 299 yards and three touchdown passes, but run for a 28-yard score as well.
