  • Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has strained calf

    21 Dec 2014 | 8:40 pm
Here is an injury story we'll be tracking throughout the week. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers strained a calf muscle in the early stages of Sunday's win over the Buccaneers. Rodgers played through the injury and compiled 31 completions on 40 attempts for 318 yards and one touchdown. "It got really tight about halftime," Rodgers said about his calf. "Came in and got a little treatment and it loosened up a tad, but it was still pretty tight, and I had a hard time running. But I was able to move kind of in short segments in the picket, which was all I needed to do today." For bookkeeping…
  • Colts sit QB Andrew Luck in third quarter of blowout loss; foreshadowing for Week 17?

    21 Dec 2014 | 8:10 pm
Sunday's matchup between the Colts and the Cowboys was projected to be a shootout, but only one team was able to fire. Dallas won, 42-7, and the game's result was no longer in doubt with less than 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter. That's when the Colts decided to end Andrew Luck's afternoon and insert Matt Hasselbeck at quarterback. Luck really struggled against the Cowboys and actually turned in his worst fantasy performance of the year, throwing for just 109 yards, no scores and two interceptions. He did not attempt a rush. FANTASY ANALYSIS: My condolences to those -- I assume many…
  • Browns QB Johnny Manziel exits early due to strained hamstring

    21 Dec 2014 | 6:49 pm
For those who thought Johnny Manziel would rebound from an awful debut as an NFL starter, well, his body didn't give him much of a chance. Manziel was injured on a rush late in the first half of Sunday's loss to the Panthers. He strained a hamstring and did not return. Granted, it's not like Manziel was on his way to a big day prior to the injury. He completed three of eight throws for 32 yards. He ran twice for 3 total yards. Brian Hoyer replaced Manziel and went 7-for-13 for 134 yards, one touchdown and one interception. FANTASY ANALYSIS: The early word is that Manziel is "questionable" for…

As most people know, the NFL reserves the right to wait until after Week 16 to determine the final SNF game. My understanding is that the league will always prioritize a "win or go home" game. But I can't find that written anywhere. It raises an interesting conundrum for this season, as it would mean they would show the sub-.500 CAR-ATL game instead of what most people would consider a better match-up between GB-DET, since the team that loses the latter game is still in the playoffs.   Anyone know? I guess we'll find out soon enough.   ETA: I forgot that CIN-PIT could be a similar…

  • Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Luke Willson's Post-Week 16 Fantasy Reaction

    21 Dec 2014 | 9:13 pm
Fantasy championships may have swung in a big way late in the Seattle Seahawks' 35-6 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16. The magic of Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson and the late surge from bruising ball-carrier Marshawn Lynch justified their statuses as No. 1 fantasy options. SportsNation weighed in on how well the Seahawks gashed Arizona's sixth-ranked rush defense: Wilson's dearth of receivers always welcomes new contributors to step up, and on Sunday it was tight end Luke Willson who rose to the occasion. The Cardinals threw every blitz they could at Wilson, and the young…

    21 Dec 2014 | 5:31 pm
Andrew Luck picked the worst week. With most fantasy football leagues wrapping up in Week 16, it was imperative that studs like Luck deliver with big performances. Luck did the complete opposite in a 42-7 decimation at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys. ESPN's Matthew Berry tried to offer words of encouragement for those owners burned by the Indianapolis Colts quarterback: As Luck struggled, he dragged most of the Colts offense down with him. Reggie Wayne failed to make any sort of discernible impact. The same could be said of Daniel Herron. For those owners in leagues that run through Week 17,…

    20 Dec 2014 | 1:15 am
Alright,  Has anyone seen the Steamer projections for 2015 for Yusmeiro Petit? 208 IP / 3.22 ERA / 1.12 WHIP / 198 K / 48 BB That is a very very good starter in any league format.  I have not found any guarantee that he has a starting job. Rotochamp and Steamer600 think that he will pitch 100IP or 65IP. I also heard some talks that they want to try him as a closer.  Where do you guys see him in 2015.    Here is his 2014 line:  117 IP / 3.69 ERA / 1.02 WHIP / 133 K / 22 BB / xFIP 2.84 / BABIP .290
  • Sonny Gray 2015 Outlook

    19 Dec 2014 | 11:18 am
Hey, a player that the A's have decided to hang on to!    First full season in the majors last year,  Sonny finished with a great overall line, racking up 183 Ks in 219 innings.  He wasn't as stellar after the all star break but this could be written up to fatigue down the stretch in his first full season as a starter.    So what do we expect this year from Gray?  A step forward, sideways, or backwards?  To me, he is one of the more promising young SP's in the game right now and I'm looking forward to seeing what he is capable of in his sophomore…
  • Justin Upton 2015 Outlook

    19 Dec 2014 | 11:06 am
Interesting trade for the Padres; as they didn't have to give up any top prospects. Does J-Up finally blossom into the type of talent he's been projected to have? He's one of the few guys in the league that can hit 25 bombs at Petco.   I'm also assuming he hits 3rd with Kemp 4th and Myers 5th. Projections for the year? I don't think he has that next level, but at 27 he could surprise us all. I'll go with the still solid and typical Upton numbers   .265BA 80R 26HR 90RBI 12SB
  • Brett Cecil 2015 Outlook

    17 Dec 2014 | 12:24 pm
Well, I think that if he gets the job he can be tremendous.  The TOR lineup is loaded and I think that he will get a shot.  2014 stats:  53.1 IP / 27 BB / 76 K / 2.70 ERA / 1.37 WHIP   I know he didn't pitch a lot of 9th Innings, but if you compare him to Trevor Rosenthal (who gets a lot of love):  70.1 IP / 42 BB / 87 K / 3.20 ERA / 1.41 WHIP   I completely agree that there is a difference between pitching the 8th and 9th Inning, but I still think that there is something there in Cecil. Does someone agree or think I am totally nuts?

In football, many say “defense wins championships”. In Fantasy Football, scoring more points than your opponent wins championships. I actually find that accurate in all sports, both fantasy and real. That has been your goal on a week-to-week basis, and the overall goal was to be competitive for THIS WEEK. (As I have noted for weeks now) If your league is waiting to hold its championship for Week 17, this is all I have to say to your league’s commissioner… Do you really want to leave THE CHAMPIONSHIP up to suspicion that key fantasy players will be sat in the final week…

It defies logic. Yet somehow it holds true every season. I will be eliminated from the playoffs in Week 15. I’v been playing in the same fantasy football league since around 2003. Not once have I won the championship. It seems there is a curse against my team. And not one that I can figure out how to remove. Not since 2009 have I even made it into the championship matchup. 19 Dec 2014 | 10:15 am
Top Pick Detroit Lions (-8.5) vs. Chi – The complete implosion in Chicago makes this the top pick of the day. QB Jimmy Claussen will start in Jay Cutler’s place and the Lions D will be ALL over him. Detroit will blowout the Bears and easily cover the point spread. Next Carolina Panthers (-3) vs. Cle – Sorry Johnny, it’s a steep learning curve in the NFL. The rookie QB will struggle again mightily against a subpar D. Philadelphia Eagles (-7.5) vs. Was – RGIII is a welcome sight for an Eagles team reeling after two losses. The Eagles will win by double digits.

Editor’s Note: Since the story lines are so obvious this week (Jay Cutler’s benching, Johnny Manziel’s second try, Ryan Lindley being fed to wolves), we’re going to swap the Sunday Six Pack for something different this week. We work 24/7, 365 around here and never really take a break. With that in mind, we’re already looking ahead beyond this week as we start bringing you what others consider to be “off-season” content. Again, there are 100 places you can go for that, so no reason to repeat ourselves or others. The Sunday Morning Huddle goes through each game and states what we’re looking to see from a dynasty…

As we approach the final fantasy-relevant games of the season, even those in championships are keeping an eye on the back ends of their roster for adds off the waiver wire. To this end, this week’s featured player has been one of the most added in my leagues over the last couple weeks. Kansas City rookie wide receiver Albert Wilson has begun to pick up steam as the season winds down, so we will take a look at what he has to offer for fantasy owners in 2015. At 5’9” and over 200 pounds, Wilson is a solidly built receiver who has drawn comparisons to the likes of former first round pick…

Cam Newton Injures Back in Car Crash   View image | gettyimages.com With the back breaking news of Cam Newton’s injury, fantasy owners everywhere (especially those in the playoffs) should be scrambling for a replacement- but not at the quarterback position.   Let’s be honest, unless you’re a Panthers homer Newton has kept your bench nice and warm this season.  In most fantasy leagues Newton's loss will have little impact on fantasy playoffs.  However, the loss of Newton could significantly impact owners who were set to roll with Jonathan…

Most fantasy football owners have only a few regular season games remaining to make a mark on their leagues. Some of you are set, others are out of playoff contention, but most of you are likely fighting for those few coveted playoff spots. Unless you've been extraordinarily lucky, the injury bug has likely impacted your fantasy team in some way.  If injuries haven't been prevalent enough, we're still not quite done with bye weeks yet!  It's time to start some of those bench players you've been stashing while at the same time cutting loose the dead weight. • Torrey Smith in Doubt For Week 15

    10 Dec 2014 | 5:05 am
Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith is in doubt for week 15, as he continues to nurse a sprained knee. Early reports suggest Smith is a “long shot” to suit up against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and fantasy football league managers can start considering alternative options early in the week. This news obviously boosts teammate Steve Smith considerably. Smith ended a scoring drought last week by finding the end-zone, but had been plagued for weeks by drops, while Torrey Smith had been catching much of quarterback Joe Flacco’s attention. With Torrey Smith likely out,…

By now you’ve heard that Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a car accident. The good news is that he wasn’t seriously injured and was actually caught smiling immediately after the accident. Unfortunately, being “fine” after a car accident and good enough to play professional football are two very different things. Newton reportedly still suffered two minor cracks in his back, similar to what Tony Romo sustained in week eight. Romo went on to miss one game and used a bye week to get back to full strength. Newton won’t have the luxury of…

Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy mashed the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football in week 14. However, he was absent from the team’s closing drive due to a hip injury, which naturally stirred up questions about his week 15 availability. The injury has been diagnosed as a hip bruise, but head coach Mike McCarthy reportedly does not have a “high concern” in regards to the injury. It looks like Lacy’s removal from Monday night’s game was more about playing it safe than a star player nursing a serious injury. James Starks matched Lacy with over 70 rushing…

Finding the Best Fantasy Value: Player Cost (Dollar Value) Per Point of Production First of I want to brag a bit and show off one of my lineups this week.  I scored 192.68 points and came in 115th place out of 57,500 entries.  To put things in perspective so you can see how close to winning and moving up from 115th to 10 place, I was 12 points away from 10th place and about 29 points away from taking 1st place! Thursday Night Game 12/11 8:25 ET At St. Louis -3 Arizona 40.5 Vegas sees this as a low scoring game which is not good for fantasy football.  Im probably going to fade this game all together other than the St.Louis defense,  that has been killing it the last few weeks.  This week they are going for a potential shutout 3 weeks in a row.
