Now that I've aquired Ryan in both of my dynasty leagues, I'm going to express my excitement for his projections going foward. I keep seeing him around 8-12 in the QB rankings. Even in dynasty rankings. At the worst, I see him as a top 6 QB going foward with a sharp dropoff after him. Rodgers, Newton, and Stafford are there in dynasty/redraft and Brady/Brees in redraft. I don't think I'd trade Ryan for anyone other than Stafford or Rodgers in dynasty. Why? Check out his stats weeks 9-16 last year. He was the 6th best QB in that time span. Week 17, he was rested. Julio Jones was just starting…

Detroit's Calvin Johnson had some (very) good seasons going into the 2011 season. With elite size (6'5", 235 pounds) and athleticism, however, Megatron seemed capable of even more, especially with improved quarterback play. Not only did Matthew Stafford, the top overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, stay healthy for 16 games, he became one of only four quarterbacks in NFL history to throw for 5,000-plus yards. Meanwhile, Johnson blew away his previous career highs. In 2011 (previous highs in parenthesis), Johnson had 96 receptions (78) for a league-high 1,681 yards (1,331) and 16 touchdowns…

Our nearly 20-month-old son is totally a dangerophile. He started walking a little bit on the early side and pretty much from the second he became mobile I think he eagerly sought out every conceivable way of finding danger. I assumed he was just being an explorer like many little kiddos but secretly wondered if maybe he somehow acquired a stuntman gene. I definitely have calm-kid-envy when I see other kids peacefully playing on the floor and not seeking the highest possible surface from which to climb and then plunge down...so I must say I felt a little bit validated when our son's daycare…

Our son's class will be marching as a group of bees (taking bets on whether or not our son will leave his bee tentacles on his head for longer than 3 seconds) so all the kids was asked to dress in their best yellow and/or black. As I dropped our son off I noticed one kiddo rocking the mini Steelers jersey and thought that was a nice nod to NFL Draft season as well. Kudos, parents, kudos. • How much would a perfect backup QB be worth?

    16 May 2012 | 1:14 am
How much would it be worth to a team with an elite quarterback to get a replica of their quarterback as their backup? For example, imagine if the Patriots had the opportunity to sign a Tom Brady clone, who would be just like Brady, but would only play if the actual Brady was out with an injury. How much should they be willing to pay the Brady clone to be their backup for this season? He'd be a perfect insurance policy - if Brady goes out with an injury (like in 2008) then the offense wouldn't lose a thing and the clone would add a ton of value to the team. But if Brady stays healthy (like in…

Journal has an interesting article, which voices many things that fans have been thinking - that being it is very unlikely Driver will wear the green and gold this season. A couple of weeks ago at the NFL draft, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy danced around questions of a 14th season for Donald Driver in Green Bay. • NFL Draft 2012: 3 Things You Missed on Twitter During the First Round

    Jacob
    27 Apr 2012 | 3:50 pm
Last night, we entered into the official “relapse” period for all NFL addicts, also known as the NFL draft. While it’s not as good as watching an actual game, drafting a fantasy football team, or surfing the waiver wire, it’s enough of a fix to get me excited. And even better than the TV coverage of the event itself is all the chatter going on via Twitter.Since I understand that some folks couldn’t set aside Thursday night obligations to enjoy the first round experience and because some of you may not be on Twitter just yet, I thought I’d share what you…

    Jacob
    26 Apr 2012 | 1:46 pm
This is why we can’t have nice things. Ruxin stroked out. Kevin got everyone busted for redrawing the draft order, and Andre still doesn’t have an ICE. How can we save this season? We all got a bit of a scare in the last episode. Could Ruxin be dead? Will his face really stick like that? And who takes over his team? You’ll be delighted to know that he lived — at least long enough for Rafi to rack up several attempted murder charges. In my view, killing Ruxin would be a step in the wrong direction, so I’m glad Rafi’s thinly veiled attempts to smother his…

Whether it’s karma or the careful plotting of the rest of the league, Ruxin’s had a string of bad luck ever since he brought home the championship last season. He hits rock bottom in this, the last episode before the season finale. It’s easy to say he had it coming. I mean, he ended last season with a “Suck it!” to the entire league and a reign of terror that darkened the skies of Chicago. Now, as his champion season comes an end, Ruxin’s been beat down, abused, and put in his place more than once. With Pete and Ruxin both one loss away from playing in the…

Pete’s general lack of ambition and disheveled appearance certainly don’t hinder his ability with the ladies. His prowess is best displayed in his uncanny ability to “outkick his coverage” with each girl he brings around. Danielle, his latest catch, is just another example of his ability to go above and beyond. Kudos to him.But she’s no Jenny. As the league goes into the final week of the regular season, Ruxin’s in full gloat mode and laying into the entire league with video trash-talking rants on the league boards. Can’t say that I blame him. Ruxin is an evil soul, but even those most evil of forces cannot be denied salvation.Ruxin finds it himself and a possible deliverance from fantasy suffering when a chance encounter with the brethren of The Light of Genesis, arranged by Pete as part of a prank war between he and Ruxin, exposes him to their incredible wealth of fantasy knowledge and sources.Much like “The Oracle” from Season 1, all those untouched by the forces of sin and women make the best fantasy football gurus. As such, the cult is a hive mind of oracles that has matured and learned from mistakes for years…

After professing his faith in closer Henry Rodriguez, Nationals manager Davey Johnson had to pull him out of a save situation Monday night and turn to Sean Burnett. Burnett escaped the bases-loaded jam by inducing a double-play ball, and fantasy owners immediately scurried to their waiver wire to put in a claim for him.Rodriguez will get the day off Tuesday, but Johnson again gave him a vote of confidence as the Nationals' closer. However, if Rodriguez doesn’t improve his control, Johnson might not have a choice, like what happened on Monday night.Rodriguez walked the bases loaded to get…

    14 May 2012 | 10:20 am
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the best team in the National League right now.The Dodgers still have short-term issues, however, at least in the eyes of fantasy owners. Los Angeles' best all-around hitter (Matt Kemp) might miss a few games with a hamstring injury. The Dodgers' best speedster (Dee Gordon) might be minor-league (or at least bench) bound.Owners have no choice but to look at the prospects. In this case, we're talking outfielder Scott Van Slyke and infielder Elian Herrera. Van Slyke served as a pinch-hitter over the weekend, and Herrera reportedly will be called up Monday.Van Slyke…

  • Pitcher Ranks: No love for Lester

    12 May 2012 | 11:43 am
Between last season's chicken-and-beer fiasco, Josh Beckett's off-day activities, and the fact that Daisuke Matsuzaka's impending return from Tommy John surgery is seen as an "upgrade," it's bad times for Boston's pitching staff.Jon Lester is probably the least of Boston's worries, but he's certainly been aggravating his fantasy owners all year. Lester's numbers aren't horrendous (4.29/1.36; 3.90 FIP), but with just one win and 28 Ks in 42 innings, he's not supplying the two things his owners were counting on most. Even worse is that there are no real positive signs for a turnaround.Lester's…

    Sean Douglas
    21 Apr 2012 | 2:48 pm
Photo By: Icon SMI What looked like a promising season turned into a nightmare for the St. Louis Rams in 2011, as they seemed to regress in all phases of the game. Once promising first-round pick Jason Smith and second round pick Rodger Saffold headlined a horrible offensive line, that helped Sam Bradford transform from a possible budding star as a rookie, to an ineffective, and unsure player. Picking Up The Pieces A physical brand of defense is what we should expect, in time with Coach Jeff Fisher coming to down, and the addition of corner Cortland Finnegan is a good start in that direction.

    21 Apr 2012 | 2:48 pm
Photo By: Icon SMI With defensive coordinator Ray Horton coming over from Pittsburgh, the potential for a solid defense seemed to make sense, but that wasn’t the case early in the year. Week one some rookie named Cam Newton torched the Cardinals for over 400 yards passing, and that was just the beginning of their problems, as slow safeties and an inexperienced corner in Patrick Peterson struggled. In the second half of the year, Horton finally got his boys playing some good defense, and perhaps this was a group effected from the lockout. The front seven played well and the emergence of…

Photo By: Icon SMI After a painfully slow start to the season, the Seahawks started playing winning football in the second half of the year as Marshawn Lynch turned on the Beast Mode and just as important, the defense started coming together. Young corners Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman were pleasant surprises and their size, and physical play, make them potential long time starters on the outside. However, it wasn’t just the corners that played well in the backfield as free safety Earl Thomas took another step towards stardom, and second year strong safety Kam Chanellor proved…

As a 49ers fan, I can still recall their first preseason game, when they played the Saints in New Orleans – feeling thankful that Smith didn’t have to play an entire game, for surely he would killed, because of the 49ers in-ability to block. Nevertheless, Harbargh led the 49ers to the second-best record in the NFC, and we all know what happened when San Francisco played New…

We’ve all seen the perfect rosters posted on forums that look like they’re from a four team league, but realistically you won’t be able to fill every roster slot with stars. If you can, that’s great, but there was likely either a lot of luck involved or you may want to look for a more competitive league. What you can do is mine for talent, either in the deeper rounds of your startup draft or by making cheap trades to build the end of your roster. Every roster spot on your dynasty team serves a purpose, whether it’s a prospect you expect to start for you within two years (Greg Little…

We live in a hyper-connected world in which people stream their weddings to the Internet, share their location constantly via their mobile phones and, ultimately, can bring total strangers together from all around the world, for many years at a time, to play fantasy football. With the flick of my finger I can send a message to someone on the other side of the planet. Today is a great time to be alive! While we have this capability, we don’t always use it, or even foster it, in many leagues. • 2012 NFL Draft: Fantasy Football Impact

    Marshall
    28 Apr 2012 | 1:23 pm
Only a handful of players in the 2012 NFL Draft seem likely to merit immediate fantasy football consideration.  In the draft, I prefer to treat rookies like I treat “sleepers.”  They are usually only a value if they are picked relatively late in the draft.  Their value should be based on their “floor,” not their “ceiling.”  They are generally too risky to pick early in the draft, where you should be picking players in their primes with proven track records.  If you get too cute with your “inspired” selections, you’ll end up…
  • Should I Draft Tim Tebow in Fantasy Football 2012?

    Marshall
    19 Apr 2012 | 1:08 pm
The great and mighty Tebow.  Possibly the most polarizing player in NFL history for reasons that escape me.  For the most part, he seems like a nice guy trying to earn a living.  However, none of that matters in fantasy football — only statistics matter. So, does Tebow merit draft consideration in fantasy football this year? Unless its is a very, very deep league or possibly a dual QB league, I would not draft Tebow.  At best, he will start the season as your fantasy backup.  I rarely see the need to even carry any backup QB in a single QB league, particularly early in the…
  • Boring Consistency the Key to Winning in Fantasy Football

    Marshall
    16 Apr 2012 | 7:13 pm
Fantasy football is all about using the most boring, consistent strategy possible.  No matter how smart you think you are… you probably are not smarter than basic statistics.  If you win one week 120-70, then lose the next week 60-70… you are 1-1.  If you put up the same 180 points as two 90 point weeks in a row – you are 2-0 and well on your way to a solid fantasy year. It is, of course, tempting to swing for the fences on every draft pick, going for that electric rising star that is finally going to put it all together this year.  Unfortunately, there are a couple of problems…
  • Should I draft Peyton Manning in fantasy football 2012?

    Marshall
    15 Apr 2012 | 6:57 pm
Peyton Manning has certainly dominated the offseason news, but what will he do in the fantasy world this season?  Is he still worth a high draft pick?  For several reasons, I do not believe he is: Age:  Manning is getting older.  Only a handful of QB’s have ever won a Super Bowl at his age or older.  His statistics (the only things that matter in fantasy football) have been in decline for the past several seasons, even excluding last year’s goose egg.  He will still be a great leader, but its hard to believe father time won’t continue taking a toll. Injury Risk: …
  • Should You Draft Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin in Fantasy Football 2012??

    Marshall
    6 Mar 2012 | 3:06 pm
From a real football perspective, Andrew Luck is the safe choice as the number one pick in the NFL Draft.  Non-traditional quarterbacks do not win Super Bowls.  Period, exclamation mark, end of story.  Tactical mastermind, drop-back passers win Super Bowls.  Based on the history of the league, a QB like Luck is more likely to win a Super Bowl at some point in his career.  He is probably also somewhat less likely to suffer a rash of injuries. From a fantasy perspective — Robert Griffin  III will likely be the more attractive option and the only rookie QB I would consider drafting…

  • Lying, Whoring Numbers: 5/9/12

In Italy, admiring the statue of DavidPhoto Credit:Caroline Bonarde Ucci Welcome to “John Travolta Numbers.” You know, because John Travolta lies (naked, for potentially gay masseuses) and whores (naked, for potentially gay masseuses). Think that joke is a stretch? Well, my retort is that I stretched your moms out last night, and I didn’t even need to pose as a masseuse (though if I did, it would be a totally hetero disguise complete with beef jerky and matted-together issues of “Greasy V’s” magazine).More after the jump:

Photo Credit: Marianne O'Leary Although baseball is well underway and the season is chugging along as usual, there are a number of absolute studs that have been seriously underperforming. Obviously everybody and their mother knows of Albert Pujols’ struggles, but Jose Bautista and Robinson Cano are also putting up duds on the regular nowadays. Moving down the totem pole a bit, guys like Jose Reyes, Ben Zobrist, Brandon Philips, and Nelson Cruz are also punishing owners for taking them early in the draft. Find out what the future holds for these dudes.More after the jump:

  • St. Louis Rams 2012 Schedule

  • Arizona Cardinals 2012 Schedule

    Sean Douglas
    21 Apr 2012 | 2:48 pm
Photo By: Icon SMI With defensive coordinator Ray Horton coming over from Pittsburgh, the potential for a solid defense seemed to make sense, but that wasn’t the case early in the year. Week one some rookie named Cam Newton torched the Cardinals for over 400 yards passing, and that was just the beginning of their problems, as slow safeties and an inexperienced corner in Patrick Peterson struggled. In the second half of the year, Horton finally got his boys playing some good defense, and perhaps this was a group effected from the lockout. The front seven played well and the emergence of…
  • Seattle Seahawks 2012 Schedule

    Sean Douglas
    21 Apr 2012 | 2:48 pm
Photo By: Icon SMI After a painfully slow start to the season, the Seahawks started playing winning football in the second half of the year as Marshawn Lynch turned on the Beast Mode and just as important, the defense started coming together. Young corners Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman were pleasant surprises and their size, and physical play, make them potential long time starters on the outside. However, it wasn’t just the corners that played well in the backfield as free safety Earl Thomas took another step towards stardom, and second year strong safety Kam Chanellor proved…
  • San Francisco 49ers 2012 Schedule

    Sean Douglas
    21 Apr 2012 | 2:48 pm
Photo By: Icon SMI Who would’ve thought Jim Harbaugh would come into San Francisco and take an underachieving team all the way to the NFC championship game, with Alex Smith under-center, last summer? As a 49ers fan, I can still recall their first preseason game, when they played the Saints in New Orleans – feeling thankful that Smith didn’t have to play an entire game, for surely he would killed, because of the 49ers in-ability to block. Nevertheless, Harbargh led the 49ers to the second-best record in the NFC, and we all know what happened when San Francisco played New…

I will be tackling some 2012 rookie dynasty rankings. I am still a fan and promoter of re-draft or limited keeper leagues, but there is no question Dynasty is a growing trend. Before I dive in, it goes without saying that need and circumstances can always trump a rankings list. I don’t have Richardson No. [...]
